Fix the condenser at the Fleming Island house, or retire it? The air conditioner decision, warranty first
Two quotes on the same Eagle Harbor kitchen table: one to put a compressor in a condenser from the Bush years, one for a new outdoor unit. Here is how we would read them.

The two pieces of paper nobody reads until the compressor quits
Before we talk about tonnage or efficiency, we talk about two documents: the warranty that came with the equipment and the maintenance record that keeps it valid. On a straight-cool air conditioner, the compressor is the most expensive single part, and whether it is covered depends entirely on those two pieces of paper.
The Fleming Island planned communities and Oakleaf Plantation were built in a rush between about 2000 and 2007. The air conditioners that went in with them carried the builder’s choice of warranty, often the shortest one, and most were never registered by the first owner. When the compressor on one of those units fails at eighteen years, it is out of coverage, and the owner is suddenly weighing a large repair on a system that has nothing left under warranty against a new system that has everything under warranty.
That is the fork. We would rather you reach it with your eyes open than in a July heat wave.

Why coverage matters more on cooling-only equipment
A straight-cool air conditioner works harder in Clay County than its nameplate suggests. The hot season runs from late May into the fourth week of September with highs above 86, humidity in the oppressive range for most of it, and afternoon lightning that puts surges through capacitors and contactors. A condenser here logs more compressor hours in one summer than the same unit would in two summers farther north.
Three consequences follow:
- Parts coverage is worth real money. A ten-year registered parts warranty on a Lennox condenser pays for itself the first time a fan motor or a board goes.
- Maintenance is the condition of coverage. Twice-yearly service, with coil cleaning and electrical checks documented, is what the manufacturer asks for and what the brackish air off the St. Johns along River Road and Doctors Lake demands anyway.
- Surge protection is cheap insurance. A dedicated condenser surge device is a small add-on in a county that sits in Florida’s high-lightning belt.

Buying a straight-cool unit here, or buying a heat pump instead
Cook’s installs Lennox cooling-only condensers in three versions: single-stage, two-stage and variable-capacity. The right one depends on the house:
| House | What we usually suggest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1960s-70s block ranch in Bellair or Ridgewood | Two-stage condenser matched to a new air handler | The long low-stage runs pull humidity from a house with little insulation |
| 1980s-90s Lakeside two-story | Two-stage or variable, with attention to the return | Afternoon west sun and upstairs heat load |
| 2000s Oakleaf or Eagle Harbor production home | Variable-capacity if the ducts are sealed, two-stage if not | Tight envelope, humidity complaints, CDD-era duct quality |
| Home with gas service near Green Cove Springs | Straight-cool condenser plus a gas furnace | Gas heat is already in the house |
For most all-electric houses in the area, though, the honest advice is a heat pump. Same cooling performance, far cheaper heating than resistance strips on the ten to fifteen freeze nights inland Clay gets, and eligibility for the Clay Electric rebate. We sell straight-cool units where they fit and heat pumps where they fit better, and you’ll hear which column your house falls in.
Jerry can structure a replacement as a monthly payment, and the estimate costs nothing. We quote the install, the warranty registration, the surge protector and the haul-away as one number.
What Orange Park buyers ask about air conditioners
Why does the warranty on a new condenser depend on who installs it?
Manufacturers require registration, a matched indoor coil and a licensed installer for the extended parts coverage. Skip any of those and the Lennox warranty shrinks to the short default term. We register every unit before the truck leaves.
My Pace Island condenser is only eleven years old. Why talk about replacement already?
Eleven is not old for the cabinet, but a failed compressor on a never-maintained system is often the first of a chain. If the coil is sound and the refrigerant is easy to source, we repair. If both are marginal, we show you the math.
Does a cooling-only system get the same Clay Electric rebate as a heat pump?
No. Clay Electric’s Energy Smart rebate is written for heat pumps and mini-splits. JEA’s rebate inside the town has covered ENERGY STAR air conditioners, but its 2026 program year closed October 10 and the next cycle is unannounced.
What happens to the old refrigerant when you remove a condenser in Orange Park South?
It is recovered into a cylinder on the truck, never vented, and the old unit goes to a scrap handler for the copper and steel. Haul-away is part of the install, not an extra line.
